A correction

I just wanted to issue a quick correction to a statement I made during my blogging session yesterday. I got the authors of Librarian in Black and The Shifted Librarian mixed up. My sincere apologies to Sarah & Jenny. I read both every day, and both are great sources and I would encourage you visit both.

Living from a suitcase

Tomorrow starts a nice little flurry of activity for me. Wednesday through Friday I'll be in Omaha at the NLA/NEMA conference in Omaha. I'll presenting two sessions, one on blogging and one on RSS. Both have early registration figures that are very good, both of them groups that are larger than any of my previous sessions. I'll have to adjust my presentation a bit, but it should be a good time!

I come home Friday, have Saturday to pack, do laundry, spend some time with Julie, and then early Sunday I'm on a plane for Santa Fe. I'm off to Ghost Ranch for the MPLA Leadership Institute. I'll be out there with no TV, no telephone, no computers, no "nothin'". I'm looking forward to that as well!

Finally, Julie will pick me up at the airport Friday night and we go non-stop to Grand Island for the Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska pageant that starts the following morning. I just hope I'm not too jet lagged for that. And yes, I am looking forward to this event, just like the previous ones.

We'll get back mid-day Sunday and then I have one day off of work to recover. Tuesday I'm giving a session at work about a new service that we are providing at the Libraries. Luckily that is a session I've done a few times before and I can do it in my sleep.

After that, things should settle down a bit until the next school semester. Since I really can't take a bunch of time off at once, and I have some vacation time to burn - I'm taking every Monday off for the rest of the year. Yeah, three day weekends for the rest of the year!

Nebraskans - Please Read

Normally I don't get into politics here, but this is something I really feel strongly about.

Disclaimer

I do want to make the statement that the opinions in this blog do not necessarily represent those of my employer. I used no state resources in this posting. I am speaking as a private citizen and not a representative of any organization or business.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, there's a little item on the ballot for our next election, a constitutional amendment called Initiative 423 or "Stop OverSpending Nebraska". If this passes, our state will be in a position where the legislature would be unable to be flexible in budgeting for our state.

Please review the information available at NotinNebraska.com as I don't think I could say things any better than they did.

Also, The University of Nebraska has released a brief on the impact of this initiative. You may want to look at that report as well.

The muse strikes

Last night while watching television, I was striken by the writing bug. I've got a couple of things started, one a sci-fi detective story and another was a bit of a series of monologues I've messed around with verbally with a few friends. It seems that once I started writing they went in a slightly different direction than what I had planned, but isn't that part of the fun of it?

Maybe, just maybe I'll post some of it here when I get a better draft of it done.

A geek goes back to his roots

I've been toying with getting my first laptop for some time now, and today I bit the bullet and got one of those new MacBooks. With all the presentations and traveling I've been doing, it just makes sense for me to have my own instead continuously borrowing from the Libraries.

So the title of my post, "A geek goes back to his roots" means that I returned to the Mac platform after leaving it when I went to college. I started my computing life on an Apple II plus, then moved to a classic Mac. College was mostly a PC place, so I switched. Now I'm going back after 15 years.

Is it that big of a deal? No, but I was sure got every body in the office looking while I unboxed and set up my new "toy".
